One solution to how to stack FIBCs is by using pallets. However, wooden pallets are wasteful, can be costly, and don’t always provide a stable platform for your bags. More importantly, you don’t need them. There are ways that you can safely double stack or multistack your flexible intermediate bulk bags so they are stable and ready for transport without adding anything to the arrangement. Here’s how to double stack bulk bags.
Stacking Guidelines for FIBCs
Stacking one FIBC on top of another is rather simple. Just lift the top bag by its loops and center it over the next bag. Lower it and push down on the bottom bag a couple of times with the top bag. Essentially, you will be hollowing out a little space at the top of the bottom bag for the top bag to nest into, sort of locking it in. This method allows you to take full advantage of the bottom bag to stabilize the stack.
Pyramid Stacking and Supported Stacking
Of course, you will often need to stack more than two bags. So, what is the correct method for storing multiple FIBCs?
You have two options: the pyramid stacking method and the supported stacking method. In pyramid stacking, you put down a layer of bags and lay another layer on top of it, tiering them inward to create a pyramid shape. In a supported stacking design, you stack the bags evenly against two retaining walls.
The supported stacking method is the optimal method. If you can ever find two, or better yet three, retaining walls that you can use to store your FIBCs against, you should take advantage of it for maximum stability. Remember to stack the bags evenly, and that three walls will give you the opportunity to balance a higher stack while maintaining good stability.
If free stacking is the only option, you must use the pyramid method. Remember that each layer of the pyramid must be resting on at least four stacks. You will have no capstone bag by itself on the top, nor a two-bag layer underneath.
Never push or pull bags from the middle of the stack, even if you are trying to remove a bag that is damaged. This can disrupt the stack and damage the other bags.
